Vacuuming your Kayak Pool

The vacuum for your swimming pool works like a household vacuum, but uses water instead of air. For this reason, care must be taken not to let air get in the system as this would weaken or halt the suction.

  • Follow your filter manufacturer’s cleaning instructions prior to vacuuming.
  • Clean the skimmer and pump basket of all debris.
  • The following items will be needed to vacuum your Kayak Pool: vacuum head, vacuum pole, vacuum hose, and a skim vac attachment
  • Attach the vacuum head to the vacuum pole.
  • Attach the vacuum hose to the vacuum head.
  • Turn the pump off; Remove the weir door from the skimmer; Turn the ball valve to the skimmer ‘open’ position; Place the skim vac in the skimmer over the basket and turn the pump on.
  • Submerge the vacuum head under the water; fill the vacuum hose with water by placing the open end in front of the water return. Once all the air is removed, cover the hose with your palm. Walk over to the skimmer and attach the hose to the skim vac attachment.
  • Press down firmly as you vacuum, moving the head slowing across the bottom.  **NOTE: Although moving the vacuum at a fast pace may appear to be doing the job equally as well, this actually creates waves, which sweep the dirt up and suspend it in the water. This dirt will eventually settle back down to the bottom. Since this occurs naturally to some extent, it may be wise to run the filter on bottom drain only for a few hours after vacuuming. It is also very common to have some fine particles returning into the pool as you vacuum.
  • If the pool is very dirty and suction seems to decrease after vacuuming for a while, this could be a sign that the filter needs cleaning.
  • After vacuuming has been completed, turn off the pump and remove the skim vac from the skimmer.
**CAUTION: Do not remove the skim vac from the skimmer while the pump is on, this will cause damage to the skimmer.
  • Replace weir door in skimmer; clean the skimmer and pump basket.
  • Return the ball valve to the operating position. Turn the pump on.
*NOTE: Check the water pressure returning to the pool. If it has decreased, your filter may need cleaning.
